In 2022, 93 percent of people living in Germany were accessing the internet. But some also either planned to go online or were offline, though the latter share got smaller every year, as can be seen in this graph. Indeed, it is perhaps even difficult to imagine someone being completely offline or even not having internet access in the first place, but this may also be the case for a variety of reasons, from resident location and technology to personal choices.
Hook, online and sinker
The share of internet users in Germany has only been climbing in recent years, growing to include more and more of the population. German users spend a significant amount of time using the internet on a daily basis. The share of German internet users who go online at least occasionally was stable in recent years. Reasons for going online vary, from entertainment to anything including practical purposes (sending and receiving emails, booking travel tickets and accommodation, getting appointments for various services), and, of course, there is online shopping. Some people base their work or even their own business online. The German population was generally interested in the internet and online services.
Wide net
Since the begin of the millennium, Germany has made enormous strides in widening the scope of internet access among the population. European countries have made significant strides in bringing the internet to more rural areas compared to other continents.
